There are tons of canned cat food options on the market, which can make choosing one a daunting task.  When trying to decide look into the brand reputation, consider your cat’s stage in life, ingredients, the variety, and dietary needs.  Once you take these factors into consideration, choosing a cat food will be easier.

Find a brand that has a credible reputation.  You want to find a brand that cares about your cat as much as you do. Life Stage

Your cat’s age and life stage are a consideration when choosing canned cat food.  Kittens need a higher calorie count than an adult cat.   While a senior cat will need more taurine than an adult cat.  According to the American Animal Hospital Association, there are six identifiable stages of a cat’s life.

  • Kitten – 0-6 months
  • Junior – 6 months - 2 years
  • Prime – 3-6 years
  • Mature – 7-10 years
  • Senior – 11-14 years
  • Geriatric – 15 years and older


When choosing canned cat food, ingredients matter.  You want to check the label and be sure that the first ingredient listed is a meat.  You want it to read tuna, salmon, mackerel or another named protein.  A red flag is if it says “meat” or “meat by-product”.  It will not be quality meat that you want your cat to eat. 

You also want to check that the cat food has taurine, vitamins, minerals, and water (which may be labeled as moisture content).  These are all critical for a cat’s overall health and wellbeing and need to be in the food.


Whether you are looking at canned cat food, you want to find a brand that has variety.  Many cats are like humans; they like a little variety in flavors.  The other benefit of mixing different types of fish is that they get a better variety of proteins, minerals, and vitamins.  It is always about benefiting your cat’s overall health.

Also, a brand that has food for different life stages.  And a lite version so that if you must change the food to a different nutrient option you are able to stay with the same brand that you and your cat love.

Dietary Needs

If your cat has special dietary needs or allergies, that is a huge determining factor when deciding on food type.  If your cat has a grain allergy and needs grain free cat food, it will make a difference in what canned cat food you choose.  If your cat has a dietary restrictions, check the labels to make sure that the ingredients are all natural and a high quality protein.
