Food Cats Should Never Eat

Cats are naturally picky eaters. If you can actually get them to like a food you are indeed lucky, because several pet parents struggle to get their cats to eat. Even if you get them high quality cat food, don't be surprised if they turn their nose up at it.

Something to think about

Although cats are naturally fussy about food, it is made worse if there is no fixed routine. As pet parents it is necessary that you nip any picky eating habits right in the bud, before it has any chance of turning into a big eating problem later.

Most cat parents prefer to feed their pets either dry or canned cat food. There are several premium and nutritive options available today that it isn't hard to find something to fit your cat's age and breed.

Vital information

But the problem is, many pet parents don't know what to feed their cats and end up feeding them the wrong diet. There are things that cats absolutely need and things that they should never consume. Essentially:

  • Kittens need a diet rich in protein and fat because it helps them develop strong bones and teeth and muscles, and also provide more energy.

  • Adult cats need calorie specific diet according to weight. Only when a cat is pregnant or nursing, she needs calories similar to that of a kitten. Otherwise, calories should be limited to prevent obesity.

  • Senior cats need a low-fat diet with easily digestible proteins because they are mostly sedentary and their kidneys aren't strong enough.

All-natural cat food rich in nutrients and free from artificial substances is best for your fur baby. However, make sure to read the label carefully before purchasing.

Look for:

  • Protein from an identified source of meat, fish or poultry (such as chicken, tuna, beef, lamb, or turkey)

  • Water

  • Taurine, an essential amino acid

  • Vitamins, minerals, fatty acids, and enzymes

Avoid:

  • Byproducts like meat and/or bone meal

  • Added sugars and colors

  • Harmful chemical preservatives like BHA, BHT, ethoxyquin and propyl gallate

  • Corn meal

  • Excess carbohydrate fillers

Things cats should never eat:

There are certain things that can cause malnutrition, poisoning and be lethal for cats. They are: onions, garlic, chives, milk, alcohol, grapes and raisins, coffee, tea, and aerated drinks, chocolates, xylitol, raw eggs, and anything containing yeast.
