Is Premium Cat Food Worth the Cost?

This type of question comes up often when considering wellness, as organic, natural, and premium cat food can cost a bit more than their lower quality alternatives.

This phenomenon is familiar to many people who have, for example, made the switch from conventionally grown to organic produce. This disparity begs the question: Do the health benefits of all-natural cat food justify the cost?

While in our opinion the answer is a resounding “yes!” we feel compelled to share in further detail how we’ve come to this unwavering conclusion. When we go grocery shopping, many of us know to avoid things such as pesticides, herbicides, preservatives, and scary-sounding sweeteners like high-fructose corn syrup.

However, it seems that unfortunately the most common adulterants found in conventional cat foods are not as widely known. These worrisome ingredients in sub-par cat food can include:

  • Gluten

  • Artificial Preservatives

  • ‘Feed-Grade’ Ingredients (such as meat meals and dead animal tissues)

  • Mycotoxins

  • Pentobarbital residue (a potent barbiturate used to euthanize animals)

  • Dyes

  • Rendered Fat (which often contains toxins such as heavy metals and salmonella)

Just as important as knowing what to avoid, is knowing what you do want in a premium cat food - protein is at the top of the list.

Your fur baby is the descendant of wild cats who hunted living prey for survival; as such, cats are innately carnivorous (although the vegan movement can undoubtedly make things understandably confusing).

Much of the time, the protein will have the name of an organ behind it, for example, chicken heart or chicken liver - these are nutrient-dense sources of protein that you can buy with confidence.

Carbohydrates are a complicated issue for cats, as their necessity is highly individual. Certain types of cats may have difficulty digesting some carbohydrates and may develop food allergies as a result. On the other hand, many cats digest carbohydrates with ease, making carbohydrates in their diet a convenient source of readily available energy.

A feline fed on the best premium cat food almost always has a healthier, glossier coat - and maintains an ideal weight. Cats fed natural cat food tend to display higher energy levels and better behavior. Another bonus is that the nutrient density of premium cat food negates the need for fancy and expensive pet supplements.

While a high-quality cat food may you set you back a few extra dimes, the decision is a no-brainer - give your cat the same love and care you would want for yourself, and get some high-quality cat food!
